Background:
In the Forest Violets storyline, Willow is the second oldest in a family of several orphaned children. She takes her first post as a personal maid to a young woman, Josette, who is kept under close watch by her twin brother Josian. Willow is charged by reporting all of Josette’s activities to Josian. Knowing that she will have to betray the young woman periodically, Willow has a cool relationship with Josette as well as all members of the household. She dislikes her employer, Josian, but because she depends on the income to support her siblings, especially her convalescent older sister, Emmanuelle, she is unfailingly respectful to him and acquiescent with his wishes.
Willow’s gift is needlework, and she fashions beautiful embroidery for Josette. Knowing that Josette is being separated from the man she loves and persuaded into marriage with one she does not love, Willow attempts to communicate peace and comfort through her embroidery pieces for Josette since she refuses to be the confidante Josette wishes her to be. Since Josette’s favorite flower is the violet, Willow makes her bed linens, a nightgown, and a bed jacket embroidered with violets.
Willow must perpetually hold a line between behaving coolly toward Josette and acquiescing to Josian’s pressure to earn Josette’s confidence. Willow assumes a cool personality even though she knows it does not meet with Josian’s ideal in terms of earning secrets from Josette and pretends to Josian that she does her best with the kind of personality that she has. To make up for this “deficiency,” she attempts to be as good a maid as she can possibly be, supplying Josette’s every comfort and doing other tasks around the household when someone is required to fill in.
Willow is constantly stressed by the pressure toward betrayal in an overall low-key way. She has already earned much acclaim for her beautiful needlework and is known as one of the most dedicated servants in the household. Still, she feels insecure because her refusal to be the kind of person her employer wants her to be could result in her being sent away one day. She tries to keep her siblings, particularly her older sister Emmanuelle, in her heart, even though she scarcely ever sees them.
In the Cristalle (post-apocalyptic) storyline, Willow is a trapeze artist with a traveling troupe of werewolves that prey on their human audience at night after the show is over. Willow’s employer Jeremy expects sex from her, and she provides it because she needs to keep her job. As the only human in the troupe, Willow shines with a special radiance. She wears very risque costumes but has long cast aside any sense of modesty, just doing what she needs to do to survive. Eventually, she runs away from the troupe with a vampire lover, and her place is filled with Ophelia (Tender Bee-a). However, the two never actually meet.
