1980s Superstar Barbies
Jan. 25th, 2026 03:42 pmWe have been snowed-in this weekend, so our immediate physical environs have been blissful. But knowing what has been happening elsewhere in the United States is horrific. I could only stomach watching two videos filming the murder. There is apparently more detailed footage, but I haven't been able to watch the event again.
To off-set this horror... Barbies. Also took photos of my dogs in the snow in their parkas.
I took out my collection and played yesterday and today, and I did some outfit research as well.

This is Heart Family Mom, left, and Day-to-Night Barbie, right, both from 1985. They took a brief walk outside in their winter wear before warming up by the fire.

Heart Family Mom is wearing Designer Collection, "Afternoon Party," #5835, from 1982, with a homemade cape (which also came with a pair of matching pants, not shown) and Day to Night Barbie is wearing a 1977 Best Buy Fashion #9618 jumpsuit and a sweater from the 1977 Ken Best Buy Fashion #9701.

I punched out some paper dolls from my two sets, Angel Face (1983) and Fantasy (1984). For each paper doll outfit, I spent a long time searching for the coordinating real doll outfit collection name and number. It was very therapeutic.
This one was one of my favorites, but I don't know that I properly identified it. The drawings aren't always 100% like the outfits, but for this one in particular, I could only find a moderately close match: Barbie Fashion Fantasy, "Romantic Valentine," #4812, from 1983.

I focused on punching out the winter-weather clothing, mostly. This is My First Ski Trip #5612, from 1982.

This red jumpsuit is Barbie Fashion Classics, "Paint the Town Red," #5700, from 1983.

This set most resembles the Barbie "Ski Party Pink" #5708 fashion.

I got out my patterns to start thinking about what Barbie clothing I'd like to make. Nothing has really called to me yet. The Simplicity 6363 pattern is my favorite of the three.

Today, I put the girls in their pink ensembles and punched out some pieces from the Fantasy paper dolls to create an overall Angel Face Barbie theme. The Fantasy paper doll on the far right is wearing Fashion Fun, "Sophisticated Lady," #5720. To her left, 1978 Sun Lovin' Malibu Barbie is wearing a My First Barbie dress from 1984. Day-to-Night Barbie is wearing a 1982 Angel Face Barbie dress with accessories. I put a little of the Angel Face makeup on her for fun. Heart Family Mom is wearing My First Party Dress #4868.

This is a close-up of Angel Face Barbie's makeup. The sponge-tipped applicator is kind of fragile, so I don't use it, but the makeup is still in excellent shape. Angel Face Barbie was my first vintage doll when I got back into collecting Barbie in the early 2010s, and she was my favorite. For a while, I didn't think I needed to get back into bjd's, I was so satisfied with her. Unfortunately, the doll body broke, and I discarded the head, with faded face paint, some time ago. In the early 2010s, these early 80s dolls were far cheaper and easier to come by than they are now.
One of the things I love about Angel Face Barbie is her contrasting two-tone hair. One of these days I may get another doll. I still have her outfit and all of her accessories.

Wei and Jareth in their parkas. It's 22F right now. I think we were outside for all of like 5 minutes before I was like, okay, let's play ball in the house. Both boys love basking in the sun. None of us were made for the cold.
